Laser / Skin Resurfacing
Overview

What is Skin Resurfacing?

  • The skin is the largest organ in our bodies.
  • As we age the effects of the sun and age appear around our eyes and lips.
  • Collagen beneath our skin diminishes and deeper wrinkles appear.
  • Laser resurfacing removes the superficial and moderately deep lines and wrinkles on the face.
  • The laser unlocks your skin's inborn ability to regenerate itself. You may rediscover skin like you had prior to wrinkle development

Skin Resurfacing

  • How can the skin rejuvenate after laser resurfacing?
  • This answer may surprise you: your skin was genetically programmed in the womb to respond by regenerating and refreshing itself!
  • The laser resurfaced areas are populated by fresh new undamaged skin surface cells, which replace previous aged, sun-damaged, or pigmented skin.
  • Improvement probably continues as the aged and sun-damaged deep collagen areas continue to regenerate and repair themselves for three to six months.

What is a CO2 Laser?

  • The CO2 laser is a high energy infrared beam of light which can be used for both cutting (surgical incisions) and for skin resurfacing.

  • The CO2 laser emits a short intense burst of energy which vaporizes the outer layer of skin, yet doesn't damage to the underlying skin. The skin is removed layer by layer so there is much more control than dermabrasion or chemical peels and it occurs without blood. The laser resurfaced skin is populated by fresh skin regenerating cells and the underlying skin tightens

  • The pulsed CO2 laser precisely applies a specially selected therapeutic wavelength of laser guided energy to the damaged skin. The first pass erases your outermost damaged skin layer without injuring vital deeper skin structures.
  • The second laser pass precisely tightens and shrinks the aged and sun-damaged deeper collagen containing structures which cause wrinkling.
  • More severely damaged skin areas may require one or two more passes.

What is a Erbium Laser?

  • The erbium laser produces less heating or burning of surrounding tissue than other lasers.
  • Erbium laser treatment also stimulates the production of collagen, creating a tightening and smoothing of the skin.
  • With the erbium laser it is often possible to treat darker pigmented skin tones.
  • Because healing is more rapid, erbium laser may cause less redness, swelling and bruising.

What is DERMA K

  • Derma K:  This laser uses proprietary technology to deliver CO2 and erbium energy simultaneously.
  • The high-energy erbium beam is used for ablation, providing a rapid course of healing (the advantages of erbium lasers), while the CO2 beam is typically used sub-ablatively, allowing minor hemostasis and providing collagen shrinkage, thereby reducing the appearance of the deeper wrinkles (the advantages of CO2).

    What are the advantages?

    • With this unique dual laser, recovery time is quick.

    • The treatment results in a firmer, smoother and renewed appearance to the skin.
    • Compared to other treatments, doctors report that patients are experiencing excellent cosmetic results with reduced redness, fewer pigmentary changes, and a faster return to normal activities as compared with other modalities.
  • Is Derma K safe?
Derma K treatment is considered safe and effective when used by trained physicians on appropriately selected patients. The device received clearance to market from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in October 1997
  • Is the treatment painful?
Most patients experience only minimal discomfort. Doctors can discuss anesthesia or any pain medications required for the treatment.
  • Who are candidates for Derma K treatment?
According to physicians who have used Derma K, the results are excellent on virtually all skin types, most complexion groups and patients of nearly any age.
  • Are there any side effects?
Side effects are minimal. There may be some redness, but this usually subsides quickly after treatment.
  • Can Derma K be used on other body locations such as the hands or neck?
Yes, because Derma K is so precise and gentle, it can often be considered for use on areas other than the face.
  • How long is a typical treatment?
Each treatment varies, but the typical procedure lasts about an hour.
