- Dr. Duffy earned his PhD and medical degree at the University of Illinois-Chicago and completed his internship at Ravenswood Hospital and Medical Center, also in Chicago. He then returned to UIC where he fulfilled his residency. Traveling to New York, Dr. Duffy completed his fellowship at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital. He became a surgical and clinical resident instructor in New York and then moved back to UIC to take up the position of Residency Director and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. He has been a co-preceptor with Allen Putterman, M.D. in the Oculoplastic Surgery fellowship program at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
- Dr. Duffy is Board Certified through the American Board of Ophthalmology as well as the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of several other organizations.
- With his unrestrained good humor and vast medical expertise, Dr. Duffy gives an attentive ear to his patients and their specific needs. Dr. Duffy specializes in all aspects of oculoplastic surgery including orbital trauma, blepharoplasty, lacrimal (tear duct) obstruction and repair, endoscopic brow lifts, and mid-facelifts. He also has widespread expertise with orbital tumors, eyelid skin cancers, ptosis, and enucleation among others. In addition, Dr. Duffy's experience sanctions his work with laser skin resurfacing, cosmetic and medical Botox and facial fillers.
- Dr. Duffy is now a member of the National Education Faculty for Botox Cosmetic – the only physician in Northeastern Wisconsin

Droopy eyelid; (πτωσις "falling, a fall") refers to droopiness of any body part
Graves' disease is an autoimmune disease. It most commonly affects the thyroid, causing it to grow to twice its size or more (goiter), be overactive, with related hyperthyroid symptoms such as increased heartbeat, muscle weakness, disturbed sleep, and irritability. It can also affect the eyes, causing bulging eyes (exophthalmos). It affects other systems of the body, including the skin and reproductive organs. It affects up to 2% of the female population, often appears after childbirth, and has a female:male incidence of 5:1 to 10:1. It has a strong hereditary component; when one identical twin has Graves' disease, the other twin will have it 25% of the time. Smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke is associated with the eye manifestations but not the thyroid manifestations. Diagnosis is usually made on the basis of symptoms, although thyroid hormone tests may be useful, particularly to monitor treatment.
Enucleation is removal of the eye, leaving the eye muscles and remaining orbital contents intact. This type of ocular surgery is indicated for a number of different ocular tumors, in eyes that have suffered severe trauma, and in eyes that are blind and painful due to other disease.
Auto-enucleation (oedipism) and other forms of serious self inflicted eye injury are an extremely rare form of severe self-harm which usually results from serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. The name comes from Oedipus, who gouged out his eyes in penance after having sex with his mother and killing his father. Some patients have apparently been inspired by the Gospel of Matthew, which states: "...if the right eye offend thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee"
Blepharoplasty can be both a functional and cosmetic surgical procedure intended to reshape the upper eyelid or lower eyelid by the removal or repositioning of excess tissue as well as by reinforcement of surrounding muscles and tendons

Patients with epiphora complain of watery eyes; it is when there is an imabance between production and drainage of tears. Visit the LACRIMAL page for more details.
